For the second -straight night of Alaska League Baseball, the Peninsula Oilers drop a league game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk-off.
Monday at Mat-Su, the Miners work a bases-loaded, base-on-balls in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 victory over the Oilers.
Miners 3 – Oilers 2
Oilers starting pitcher Max Miller walked the first three batters to load the bases for the Mat-Su Miners on just 14 pitches. The Miners plate two runs in the first inning then are held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth.
The Oilers plated a run in the second inning to draw to within one run at 2-1 Miners. In the fifth Inning, Trey Becker hit a solo home run to even the game at 2-2. The Oilers shut down Mat-Su in the bottom of the eighth after an infield error with Will O’Neil entering in relief with one out.
In the top of the ninth inning tied 2-2, the Oilers go down in order.
The Miners received a lead-off walk in the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to second and a base on balls to Blake Avila put runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. With Casey Sunseri at the plate, a double steal set up an intentional walk to load the bases with one out. Nick Cerelli worked the count full and watched a called third strike for the second out. Alex Vergara, with the bases loaded, drew a game-winning, four pitch, walk-off walk to end the game: 3-2 Miners.
The Mat-Su Miners improve to an unbeaten 6-0 record in the Alaska Baseball League. The Oilers have played four-straight one-run games in the Alaska League and own a 1-3 record in the ABL.
