The 2015 Mt Marathon event in Seward proved record-breaking in both the women’s and men’s divisions; but it was not only the speed of the Swedish runner Emelie Frosberg and Spain’s Kilian Jornet, but also the speed of the field’s front runner’s which made the 88th running of the Seward Mt. Marathon races historic.

In the women’s race, Frosberg set a new course record of 47:48 breaking the standing women’s record of 50:30 set in 1990 by Nancy Pease.  First-time women’s racer Allie Ostrander also broke the old record by posting a 50:28 finishing second.  Ostrander dominated the junior division for five season, before turning 18 and moving into the senior women’s race for 2015.

In the men’s race, Jornet bettered the course record of Eric Strabel by posting a time of 41:48.   The record stood at 42:55; a time that was also almost bested by second-place finisher Rickey Gates’ 42:56.

In the junior girls division, Ninilchik’s (KCHS) runner Rianna Boonstra finished the junior course in 32:38 for the girl’s title.  The boys junior title goes to Luke Jeager of Anchorage in a time of 27:39.
