The Mystery Creek Access Road will close this Friday, say officials with the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.
In a press release, KNWR made the notification, stating that the access road and Pipeline Corridor would close to vehicle traffic by 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 15.
“We thought about closing [the access road] after the big snow, but it was still warm enough that folks were still making it down there, so we haven’t closed it. But now we’re getting some colder weather, and ice is starting to freeze over on some of the streams,” said Deputy Refuge Manager Steve Miller. “If you fall through those [streams]—we already had it—one truck reported damage. So, we’re going to go ahead and shut it down. It usually shuts down by mid-November.
Coinciding with the beginning of grouse hunting season, the Mystery Creek Access Road and pipeline corridor generally opens in August to provide hunters better access to popular hunting spots. This year, it opened on Aug. 9.
When the road is open, travel on the road and pipeline corridor is at the user’s own risk. Users are also reminded to limit vehicle travel to the established road/right-of-way.
