The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for streams and rivers on the Western Kenai Peninsula south of Kenai.
The alert states that the combination of temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s and the recent heavy snowfall have increased the amount of runoff entering local waterways.
There are also multiple rounds of rainfall possible over the next several days.
All of those factors combined are resulting in elevated chances of areas like the Anchor River and other small streams to flood in coming days.
The lower section of the Anchor River is the most susceptible to high water due to the ice jam from earlier in the winter that has frozen solidly in place.
The National Weather Service says local law enforcement agencies will take reports of flooding and relay those to the NWS Forecast Office.
If a flooded area impacts a roadway, the National Weather Service says do not attempt to travel through that area because it only takes a few inches of swiftly moving water to carry vehicles away.
The flood advisory is in effect until Tuesday afternoon.
