Nearly 100 Lucky Alaskans Win Chance To Stake Remote Cabin Sites

Ninety-nine lucky Alaskans won a chance to own their piece of the Alaska dream on Wednesday in the Alaska Department of Natural Resources’ 2021 Remote Recreational Cabin Site Drawing. The drawing, which is held every other year, gives Alaskans the opportunity to stake a parcel of remote land in a designated staking area, lease the land until the DNR completes the survey and appraisal, and then purchase the land at appraised market value. Only Alaska residents may apply.

 

The three staking areas designated by DNR in this year’s drawing were:

 

Gov. Mike Dunleavy said:

“This remote cabin staking program is one of the things that truly sets Alaska apart as The Last Frontier. We are putting state land in private hands so Alaskan families can enjoy their very own slice of wilderness. It doesn’t get any more Alaskan than that.”

 

During the October 8 to November 30 application period, a total of 155 Alaskans applied for 99 of the 108 available parcels in the three areas. Starting February 25, 2022, winners may stake a parcel of land between 5 and 20 acres in the area for which their names were drawn. The potential maximum transfer of land from this offering into private hands is 2,160 acres.

 

The Silverbow Creek area approximately 120 road miles northwest of Fairbanks along the Elliott Highway drew the most interest of the three staking areas. There were 86 applications for 30 parcels. The Silverbow Creek area is accessible from the Elliott Highway between mileposts 121 to 129. The Alma Lakes and Mount Rich Addition II staking areas are much more remote and accessible only by airplane or a long snowmachine trip. There were 22 applications for 30 staking parcels in the Alma Lakes area and 47 applications for 48 parcels in the Mount Rich Addition II area.

 

In addition to the 99 winners, 30 alternates were also drawn in the event some winners choose not to stake a parcel. The names of winners and alternates can be found here.
