The local School District continues to implement a new lock down procedure, titled “A.L.I.C.E.” providing educators and students with more flexible options.
Kenai Police School Resources Officer Alex Prins explains…
Prins: “The way the policy was before, it was kind of one coverall. Go in the room, lock down, turn off the lights, be quiet and pray we get there.”
Prins said teachers have been training their students in a variety of ways, depending on the student’s age and understanding…
Prins: “There’s some information, some books and stories and things they’ve been sharing, so the kids are getting it and we’re at the final stages of full implementation.”
A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate, describing the various responses to changing scenarios. Prins said ALICE deals primarily with threats inside the building. Recently, threats have been coming from outside school buildings, whether it’s the April text messages between students at KCHS, which depicted a possible gun threat, or the strange phone calls received this month at K-Beach Elementary and Skyview. During those events, educators reverted to the old lockdown system of shutting the doors and keeping children away from view.
