New Year to Bring Smoke-Free Campus for KPC

Beginning in the new year, the Kenai Peninsula College will follow the University of Alaska’s lead in going smoke and tobacco free.

 

The University of Alaska Anchorage went smoke and tobacco free on November 19, and Suzie Kendrick with the Kenai River Campus said previously that the rule will be implemented at KPC on January 1.

Kendrick: “Because KPC is a community campus of the UAA campus. Chancellor Tom Case set a timeline for the implementing the policy and we’ll follow it.”

 

Once the ban takes effect, KPC and the other Alaska campuses will be among more than 1,600 U.S. colleges and universities that have gone smoke free.

 

The college won’t be hiring anyone to enforce the rules, so it will be left to students and staff to remind others that the campus is smokefree.

 

The UA Board of Regents made the announcement last December, banning all smoking and tobacco products (including hookahs and e-cigs) from all University properties. Tobacco-product littering will also attract a $50 fine.
