The Kenai Community Coalition on Cannabis has set their next meeting and challenged local representatives who oppose marijuana to an open debate.

One of the coalition’s organizers Eric Derleth said he was immensely pleased with the first town hall meeting at the Kenai Challenger Learning Center on December 16.

Derleth: “The willingness of people to share personal stories and to come out of the closet on something that has heretofore been a bit of a scarlet letter for people, so I thought that was really impressive to see people stand up and say things like they did and as well I couldn’t be more appreciative of the people who were against it and the reasons they were against it, that’s why we are making a list of their concerns so that we can maybe address them and hopefully get them to understand that we share the same goal but we think there’s different ways to accomplish that goal.”

According to the coalition’s facebook group, the upcoming meeting will present information aimed at addressing community concerns that were brought up at the last meeting as well as starting to organize working groups to involve more community members and gather information for future meetings.

The meeting date is tentatively set at January 19.
