The Nikiski Fire Department recently responded to the Nikiski Mall for a gas leak. The meter was cleared of snow and ice and the utilities were secured with Enstar Natural Gas personnel responding to the scene to assist.
The fire department wants to let the public know that residents need to keep the gas meters and exits clear of ice and snow during this time of year as ice damage is causing gas leaks all around the Central Kenai Peninsula due to snow melt, freezing and falling snow, and ice. The melting snow from a rooftop can leak onto your meter potentially blocking the vent on your meter’s regulator. A blocked meter vent could build up pressure that can expel gas back into your home or possibly cut gas flow and prevent your appliances and furnace from working properly.
Fire personnel state that all exits need to be clear of snow and ice for escape during a fire or emergency. Gas meters and electrical panels need to be easily accessed by fire and utility personnel to secure utilities during a fire.
In addition to ensuring your meter properly works, make sure the natural gas meter doesn’t have snow on or near it; move snow away from the meter instead of shoveling or using a plow to displace it on or near it; and authorities caution not to hit the meter when clearing it of ice or snow.
