The Nikiski Fire Department recently held an open house for Fire Station #3. It was reported in April that Fire Station 3 officially opened. It houses an engine and ambulance with 2 personnel 24/7 365 days a year. Construction for the station began back in January 2020.
Several notable public figures attended the open house including Senate President Peter Micciche, KPB Assemblyman Jesse Bjorkman, Chairman Mark Cialek & the NFSA Fire Board Members and Acting Chief Trent Burnett, and KPB Mayor Charlie Pierce.
Pierce said:
“It’s been a long, long time coming. I know the residents of Nikiski that the boards, the service area boards, the emergency personnel that respond to incidents in Nikiski have always had dream and the vision of having a third station located in proximity to many of the fringes, if you would, or the far fringes of their service area. They’ve accomplished that dream and they’ve just completed some $5 million construction project that puts some apparatus and some employees in closer proximity to a large portion of the residents that live in Nikiski.”
Nikiski Fire Chief Bryan Crisp spoke to KSRM:
“As you know, the project started back in 2002-2003 and so it finally got the approval last year to start building Station 3 out here in the Nikiski Fire Service Area to help that area because it was designated an ISO 10 on the insurance rating, which means people had hired insurance or couldn’t get insurance at all on their property. That was the purpose of putting in that station on to lower insurance costs. It goes from ISO 10 down to an ISO 6. Plus, we get quicker response times for fire and EMS in that area out there on the corner of Holt Lamplight and Escape Route. That was the purpose.”
The Fire Department says that they are in the process of hiring for two more positions. When they are filled, Station 3 will be manned 7 days a week.
