Nikiski & Kenai Boys Finish 2nd & 3rd In Kachemak Wrestling Tournament

Strong performances throughout the line-ups pushed the Nikiski Bulldogs and the Kenai Kardinals to second and third place team standings at the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships held at Anchorage Christian School.  The Redington Huskies earned the team championship scoring 239 points; Nikiski, 175 points; Kenai, 156 points.

 

Nikiski Bulldogs: 2nd Place 

The Nikiski Bulldogs, with its strength in the upper weight classes, recorded three individual champions and qualify at least nine wrestlers to the upcoming ASAA Division II State Wrestling Championships.

Nikiski Individual Champions

Mayaac Schmit topped the field in the 285 lb. division with a pin in the final round to secure the championship.  Robert Isabel won the 215 lb. weight class with a pin in the final match.  Sam Yerkes, at 160 lbs., earned the Bulldogs third championship, also with a final round pin.

Runner-up and third-place finishers earn berths to the state wrestling tournament from the Kachemak Conference.

125 lbs.: 2nd Place – Wyatt Maguire of Nikiski High School

145 lbs.: 2nd Place – Frank St. Denis of Nikiski High School; 3rd Place – Niles Broussard of Nikiski High School

171 lbs.: 2nd Place – Jackson Wittmer of Nikiski High School; 3rd Place – Jakeup Martin of Nikiski High School

189 lbs.: 2nd Place – Tim Goodnight of Nikiski High School

Four additional at-large berths will be awarded following the compiling of all conference tournament results.

 

Kenai Kardinals: 3rd Place

The Kenai Kardinals placed third overall in the team scoring at the Kachemak Conference tournament lead by three individual championships.

Kenai Individual Champions

Jaxson Young opened the tournament with a Kenai championship in the 103 lb. division.  Owen Whicker won the 135 lb. weight class with a pin in the final match.  At 152 lbs., Andrew Gaethle topped the bracket with a pin in the final round.

Runner-up and third-place finishers earn berths to the state wrestling tournament from the Kachemak Conference.

130 lbs.: 2nd Place – Daniel Steffensen of Kenai Central High School

140 lbs.: 2nd Place – Reymond Perez of Kenai Central High School

Four additional at-large berths will be awarded following the compiling of all conference tournament results.
