As a precaution Nikiski Middle High School and North Star Elementary School were placed on lock down this afternoon.

Pegge Erkeneff with the school district explained the lockdown would not affect release time.

Pegge: “So as a precaution both Nikiski Middle High School and Nikiski North Star Elementary School were placed on lockdown this afternoon. Students will be released on a normal schedule at the end of the day which is 2:15 for the middle high school and 3:30 for the elementary school and so that’s to a school bus, to the private vehicle for the high school students or to parents or guardians. Boys and Girls Club at both schools will take place on their usual schedule however all other after school activities today will be cancelled. Both schools have contacted students parents or are in the process of doing so.”

Troopers said that the lock down was a result of a nearby man hunt although the man had not threatened either of the schools in any way.
