The 2018 ASAA 1A State Basketball Championships entered second round action on Thursday with the Nikolaevsk Warrior boys facing Nunamiut in the championship bracket and the Ninilchik Wolverine girls scheduled to play Alak. All 1A and 2A tournament games are played at the Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of UAA.
1A Boys Winner’s Bracket: Nunamiut Wolves 56 – Nikolaevsk Warriors 42
With the exception of a 30-point effort by senior Kalenik Molodih, the Warriors offense struggled against the pressing Nunamiut Wolves defense; the Warriors falling 56-42 in Thursday’s morning round.
The Warriors shot only 25% and shot 1 of 8 from the three point arc in the first half and only one player not named Kalenik Molodih scored in the second half. Molodih scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half.
The Warriors continue tournament play with an 8 a.m. game on Friday against the Shishmaref Northern Lights. The Northern Lights dropped their Thursday contest to New Halen 66-63.
1A Girls Consolation Bracket: Ninilchik Wolverine Girls 36 – Alak 27
The Wolverines downed Alak 36-27 on Thursday in the consolation round following an opening round loss to Selawik. Trailing the Huskies 19-17 at the half, the Wolverines defense closed-down the Huskies, holding Alak to two, field goals and four free throws in the second half. Oilvia Delgado scored 13 points to lead the Wolverines.
The Ninilchik girls continue play with a 12:30 p.m. contest on Friday afternoon against Toksook Bay. A win and the Wolverines advance to Saturday’s consolation final at 11 a.m.
