The Al Howard Shootout Basketball Tournament at Soldotna High School featured a field of four girls and five boys teams with teams from three divisions of Alaska basketball.
The Ninilchik Wolverine boys, representing 2A basketball, finished tournament play unbeaten: the Palmer Moose girls, from the 4A division, finished 3-0 in tournament play.
Ninilchik Boys 74 – SoHi Boys 66
The Ninilchik Wolverines, on the strength of a 41-point, second half, defeated the Soldotna Stars 74-66 in Saturday’s final game at the Al Howard Shootout.
The 2A Wolverines, after trailing 35-33 at the half, posted a 20 point third quarter for a 53-49 lead and scored 21 points in the fourth quarter for the eight-point win over the 4A Soldotna Stars.
Ninilchik’s Landon Colburn lead all scorers with 32 points, Jaylin Scott scored 20 points and tournament MVP Lukah Kalugin added 14 points.
For the Stars, Ethan Sewell scored 20 points; however, managed only one field goal in the second half and 3 of 6 from the line.
Palmer Girls 48 – SoHi Girls 29
The Palmer Moose complete a 3-0 run through the tournament with a 48-29 victory over SoHi in the tournament’s final girls game. The two Northern Lights Conference teams faced-off on Saturday with the game counting on each teams conference record.
Palmer built an early 19-12 half time lead, SoHi holding their own in the first half with 8 of 11 free throw shooting. The Moose were lead by Paige Marshall with five three-point baskets and 16 points. SoHi’s Rhys Cannava scored 10 points to lead the Stars.
Kenai Girls 52 – South 40
Emma Beck poured-in 34 points to lead the Kenai Kardinal girls past South Anchorage 52-40 on Saturday at the Al Howard Shootout. Kenai lead by 10 at the half and by 10 after three quarters.
