No North Slope Moose Permits Due to Decline

Due to a decline in moose population in Alaska Department of Fish and Game units 26A and 26B, there will be no permit drawing for this fall.

 

According to the Department, moose surveys conducted in April this year showed a significant decline in moose numbers north of the Brooks Range.

 

Units 26A and 26B along the northern most part of Alaska near the Arctic Ocean. Unit 26A, the western North Slope, showed a 50% reduction since 2011 while 26B showed the moose population declined from around 400 moose in 2013 to 109 in 2014.

 

The Department attributes the decline in moose to a very late spring in 2013 followed by poor vegetation that summer.

 

A release stated that very few 10 month old calves were seen, indicating not many of last years calves had survived.

 

The Department said they will carefully monitor the moose population and reinstate the drawing hunt when population allows.
