NOAA Conducting Tsunami Warning Test Tomorrow

Author: KSRM News Desk |

In participation with the tsunami preparedness week NOAA and its emergency management partners are planning to conduct a test of the tsunami warning communications system tomorrow, marking the 50th anniversary of “The Great Alaska Earthquake of 1964” which occurred in Prince William Sound.

This emergency test will be broadcast on NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards, local television and all KSRM radio stations.

Residents in some coastal communities such as Homer, Seward and Kodiak may hear warning sirens, however it is only a test.

We spoke to NOAA Tsunami Program Manager Cindy Preller for information.

Preller: “We will be conducting a live code test on March 27th at approximately 10:15 in the morning. Our hope for this test is to disseminate a tsunami warning message to most of the outer Southern coast of Alaska.”

Preller wanted to remind people it is only a test and do not contact local emergency management.

Preller: “Please do not contact 911 or your emergency managers, television stations, radio stations thinking that we are actually having at true tsunami related emergency. If there is a tsunami that day, we will cancel the test and activate a true emergency but for the time being we are hoping to be tsunami free.”
