Non-Departmentals and Flooding Amendments in KPB Budget

Assembly members may cut funding to non-departmentals in the Kenai Peninsula Borough’s Fiscal Year 2016 budget.

 

Public testimony on the proposed budget will be taken at Tuesday night’s meeting.

 

Assembly member Blaine Gilman requested cuts to non-departmental funding on May 19.

Asm. Gilman(Kenai): “This is not really a question of the budget for me. What this is is the question of government. What gives us the right up here as Assembly Members to decide which non-profit groups we should fund? We don’t have any criteria or anything.”

 

Gilman and Assembly Member Wayne Ogle have now introduced separate proposals.

 

Gilman’s amendment would eliminate funding to the Economic Development District, the Small Business Development Center, and the Kenai Peninsula Tourism Marketing Council for FY 2016.

 

Ogle proposed a 10% decrease in funding to those non-profits along with a 50% decrease from CARTS’ 2015 authorized budget, and decreasing in and out of state travel funds for assembly departments.

 

Also on the agenda, Assembly member Stan Welles will also make a presentation on why the borough needs to proceed with a feasibility study on K-Beach flooding and prevention.

 

That meeting will begin at 6 pm on June 2 in the Borough Assembly Chambers.
