Kenai’s Koda Norbeck netted a short-handed, break-away goal in overtime to push the Kenai Kardinal hockey team past the Soldotna Stars 4-3 in the 4th-place game at the 2022 ASAA Division II State Hockey Championships on Saturday.

Tied 3-3 after regulation, Carson Koppes, in goal for the Kardinals, turned-away a pair of power-play shots by SoHi and Kenai scored the game-winner on a Norbeck goal; after the Kardinals tied the game with only 3:13 remaining in regulation.
Kenai opened the scoring with an early first-period goal by Logan Mese. The Kardinals extended their lead to 2-0 with a Jacob Begich goal late in the second period.
With Kenai leading 2-0, the Stars scored three-straight, third period goals to take a 3-2 lead mid-way through the third period. SoHi’s Josh O’Lena opened the attack with a power-play goal just :43 seconds into the third. Boone Theiler added a power-play goal at 4:28 to even the game at 2-2. SoHi’s Silas Larsen gave the Stars their first lead at 8:06 with a put-back goal for SoHi.
The overtime goal for Kenai’s Koda Norbeck sealed the victory 4-3 for the Kardinals. In goal for Kenai Carson Koppes recorded 22 saves; in goal for the Stars Ayden See recorded 24 saves.
Kenai finishes state tournament play with a 2-1 record and 4th-place. The Stars finish at 1-2 with both defeats coming in overtime for SoHi.
