Recently the Department of Transportation has stated that a categorical exclusion is likely to happen for the North Road Extension.
Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Mike Navarre detailed the implications of that categorical exclusion.
Navaree: “That will eliminate the need to do a environmental assessment or an environmental impact statement in which case it could delay the project or use up the funds that are available.”
Chief of Staff Paul Ostrander attended a meeting in Anchorage October 28 and said the project appears to be moving forward.
Ostrander: “As of now the proposal is still now for an 18 foot wide road with pull outs every quarter miles or if there is a hilly section or a curvy section possibly more pull outs than that. DOT as begun some preliminary work on the project, The folks that were represented there today were from everything from servery and right of way to material and utilities so they’ve brought in a large contingent of folks that are already beginning to work on the project.”
