North Road Extension Task Force Asking For Feedback On North Road Extension Project

The North Road Extension Task Force is requesting residents of the Kenai Peninsula Borough to provide their opinion and comments on the North Road Extension Project through a survey that aims to guide the future of the project in Nikiski. The idea to build a road beyond Captain Cook State Park for the purposes of accessing property in the Grey Cliffs, Moose Point, and Point Possession subdivisions has been the goal of Nikiski residents and recreational property users for decades, according to Assembly Member Jesse Bjorkman.

He tells KSRM:

The community now is kind of making a concerted effort to extend the road out towards those subdivisions and provide more access and easier access to some property. Those folks that have been advocating for this road have been involved in this process encouraging folks to get the road built. One big important part of the process is that we engage as many community members as possible here in Nikiski and those that have a stake in, or interest in more property access out in the north road, that they fill out a survey to provide their information and input to the North Road Extension Task Force as well as, then, the Borough Assembly put their opinions on the North Road Extension.”

In recent years, 8.1 miles of road have been completed towards fulfilling the vision of the North Road Extension. Many community members would like to see the road be completed to provide easier access to more subdivided properties.

In August 2021, Assembly Member Jesse Bjorkman, along with Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce, held a community meeting to discuss the possibilities of continuing the North Road Extension project. At that meeting, community members expressed support as well as some reservations about the project. Bjorkman writes that dozens of stakeholders gathered to give testimony with most being in strong support for the extension project and some suggesting adjustments to the current road as well as alternatives.
