King Harald V of Norway visited Homer on Tuesday and was greeted by cheers at the small boat harbor.
Jan Knutson: “About 11:30 out on the Spit was the set up and the welcome for the King so we were well represented with the Chamber and a full group of probably over one hundred people. And I’m Norwegian by descent so I’m especially honored and proud that King Harald came to Homer.”
Homer Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor’s Center Manager Jan Knutson attended the 78 year-old King’s greeting.
She said people were decked out in Norwegian sweaters and scarves, a 102 year-old Homer resident shook the King’s hand, and a little girl presented flowers to him when he arrived.
Knutson: “He’s very interested in environmental concerns, and when he came here to Homer the stop was mainly ceremonial and honorary and he was taken by boat to Tutka Lodge and had lunch over there and continued discussions there.”
King Harald’s visit was reportedly to compare the region similarities between Alaska and Norway in areas such as climate change and industry.
Tuesday also marked the first of nine cruise ships that will be docking in Homer this summer.
