The City of Kenai has announced that it will hold a regular election scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2021 in a notice announced on Wednesday.
According to the Kenai City Clerk’s Office, candidate qualifications include a requirement to be at least 21 years of age. You must be a qualified voter in the state of Alaska and be a resident of the City of Kenai for one year prior to Election Day within city limits. If someone is interested in applying, they are encouraged to come pick up nominating petitions at the Kenai City Clerk’s office. They are also available on the city’s website.
There will be two seats that are up for election, each with a three-year term ending October 2024. They include Victoria Askin’s seat. She has been in office since December due to taking over for former councilman Robert Peterkin, who resigned.
At the last Council meeting, Askin said:
“Last but not least, I plan to run for my seat for City Council this year.”
The second seat up for election in October belongs to Vice Mayor Bob Molloy, who is not seeking reelection:
“Also, I’m really pleased to hear that Councilmember Askin is going to run for reelection again. I really enjoy working with you, very thoughtful, hard working person. I definitely plan on voting for you. It continues to be, and will be, an honor and a privilege to continue serving the citizens of Kenai together with all of you on the City Council until the term of my 2018 council ends this October of 2021. I want to thank all of the voters who have supported me in the past and who have encouraged me to run again, but it is time for me to be term limited and it is time for somebody else to have the opportunity to serve on the City Council. I wanted to let the public know that, you know, it’s great working with you all, it really is.”
According to Kenai City Charter 10-3 Filing, a qualified individual may have their name placed on the ballot for the election as a candidate for Councilmember by filing, with the City Clerk at times and pursuant to procedures provided by ordinance, a sworn statement of their candidacy; provided that statement shall be accompanied by a nominating petition signed by twenty or more registered qualified City voters. The filing period for the two City Council three-year terms opens August 2nd and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 16, 2021.
