The City of Soldotna has sent a notice to the general public that three council seats need to be filled and that there will be a municipal election on October 5th. The seats up for election include Council Seat A, Council Seat B, and Council Seat C.

Soldotna City Clerk Shellie Saner:

Seat A was vacated by Mayor (Paul) Whitney when he was elected mayor last fall. Linda Hutchings was appointed at that. The normal term ends on the seat would have been 2021. That’s why that seat will be on this ballot again this year for a three-year term. Seat B was recently vacated by Pamela Parker. Erick Hugarte was appointed until October this year and the normal term on Seat B would have ended in 2023, that’s why it will be two-year term on the ballot. Councilmember Chilson was elected three years ago to Council Seat C. That seat will be on the ballot for a three-year term again.”

Saner speaks on candidate qualifications:

To be eligible for city office, you must be a resident of the city for at least one-year preceding the declaration. The date you file with me you had to have been a resident of the city for one year from that date, a citizen of the United States and a qualified voter of the city.”

Saner on when swearing in will be:

The election will be certified on October 13th, which is our regular council meeting day. Then, the candidates do not officially take office until October 18th, but we will do a ceremonial swearing in for any of them that are present on October 13th.”

Candidates must file a declaration of candidacy with the Soldotna City Clerk during the candidate filing period which begins on August, 2, 2021 at 8:00 a.m., and closes on August, 16, 2021 at noon.
