Officials to Measure Mt. McKinley for New Summit Elevation

The current official elevation of North America’s tallest peak may be changed from 20,320 feet in August.

Climbers have collected data from Mount McKinley to more accurately determine its highest point.

The U.S. Geological Survey is leading the work on the project and has partnered with the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Geophysical Institute along with others.

The data from climbers viz GPS instruments collected in June is being analyzed.

The most recent method provides more accurate information that that which was used in 2013 and calculated a slightly lower elevation than the current measurement, according to officials.
