State and federal agencies are urging Alaskans to rely on verified information amid a wave of false or misleading social media posts regarding Mount Spurr Volcano.

The Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), the National Weather Service, and local emergency management offices issued a joint statement Thursday reassuring the public that volcanic activity does not currently threaten travel, tourism, or recreation in the state.

As of Apr. 17, Mount Spurr remains at Alert Level Yellow, meaning volcanic activity is elevated above normal levels, but an eruption is not imminent.

“While there is some unrest, current activity does not suggest an eruption is imminent,” officials said. “Should conditions change, the Alaska Volcano Observatory will raise the alert level and Aviation Color Code.”

AVO continues to monitor seismic and gas emissions from the volcano, located roughly 80 miles west of Anchorage. Experts say increased unrest could provide days to weeks of advance warning if an eruption becomes likely.

Officials are particularly concerned about misinformation spreading on social media, with some posts inaccurately claiming evacuations or imminent danger. They remind the public to verify information before sharing and avoid using emergency lines like 911 for non-urgent questions.

Where to Get Verified Information:

Residents can also use the FEMA app to receive real-time weather and hazard alerts, including volcano activity, and locate emergency shelters if needed.

Officials urge residents and visitors to stay calm and informed and share only trusted information. “Before reposting anything about Mount Spurr, check with official sources,” the statement said.
