Oilers Errors Costly In 13-3 Loss To Pilots

Sometimes it’s smooth sailing; sometimes the road is a little bumpy.

For the Peninsula Oilers, in their home-opener, the defensive wheels came completely off in a 13-3, ten-run rule loss to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

 

A large and enthusiastic crowd did its best to bolster the Oilers; the crowd numerous times busting into spontaneous crowd cheers on a perfect low-70’s, blue sky, relatively wind-free night at the ball park.

 

Oilers 3 – Glacier Pilots 13

The Oilers opened the first inning with a Shunsuke Sakaino single and a RBI single for James Shimashita and an early 1-0 lead for the Oilers.  The Pilots attack was methodical with two runs in the second, two runs in the third and a run in the fourth. The Pilots took advantage of three errors in the seventh inning for a seven run attack-all runs unearned.

Oilers starter Knolton Clark was tagged with the loss allowing five runs, three unearned, with seven strikeouts.  Mose Hayes pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts and allowing one run.  Will O’Neil threw the seventh inning and was charged with seven runs, all unearned on three errors.  Final score: Pilots 13, Oilers 3.

 

The Oilers face the Glacier Pilots on Thursday at 6 p.m. in game-two of the five-game home-opening series.
