The Oilers lost badly in the season’s second matchup against the Mat Su Miners by a final score of 10-1.
Out of the gate, the Oilers looked good, capitalizing on an RBI single from Colin Robson (Rice) that drove in lead-off hitter Max Roffwarg (Swarthmore) to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The early-going offense in the first that consisted of two hits would be two of the team’s four total on the day.
The Miners offense exploded in the bottom of the first inning, scoring six runs and jumping out to a commanding five-run lead. The Miners tallied up five hits in the process, led by DH Chase Wilcox, who tallied up 3 RBIs in the first while celebrating his 20th birthday.
Oilers starting pitcher Max Sasaki (Long Beach) went one inning, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks with no strikeouts. Relief pitcher Emerson Fleck (Washington State) would come in for early relief, going three innings, allowing two runs on one hit, three walks, and no strikeouts, making it an 8-1 ballgame headed into the fifth inning.
The Miners used a total of eight pitchers on their way to the win, most likely to save arms for the showcase games happening in Anchorage over the weekend. The oilers’ bats were quiet for the most part, and they only recorded five hits in total in the ball game.
Eduardo Mendoza earned the win for the Minors, while Oiler’s starter Max Sasaki was dealt the loss in the contest. Oilers drop to 1-3 on the season while the Miners improve to 4-1.
The Kenai squad will head to Anchorage for their next game tomorrow. They will face off against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in a seven-inning showcase game, where players get to play in front of MLB scouts from numerous teams.
