The Peninsula Oilers, battling for a spot in the Alaska Baseball League playoffs, completed a two-game sweep of Sunday’s doubleheader in Palmer against the first-place Mat-Su Miners.
Game One: Oilers 5 – Miners 1
The Oilers plated three runs in the first inning in route to a 5-1 victory over the Mat-Su Miners. Benny Wanger hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and drove in a run in the sixth. Preston Plovanich pitched six innings and allowed one run and recorded 7 strikeouts.
Game Two: Oilers 5 – Miners 3
Trailing 2-0 into the sixth inning of the seven inning second game of the doubleheader, the Oilers plated two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh for a 5-3 victory over the Miners.
Benny Wanger drove in one run and Raymond Kerr recorded the second RBI.
In the seventh, Wanger drove in two more runs and the Oilers plated three runs for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over Mat-Su.
The Oilers improve to 16-20 and Mat-Su drops to 21-14.
The Oilers face the Miners on Monday at Herman Brothers Field. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
