Old Town Kenai Reversing Course

Old Town Kenai is reversing course, with drivers to be offered a better view of the Inlet, Russian Orthodox Church, and other historic buildings.

Betty Idleman with the Kenai Historical Society wrote to the Kenai City Council last April, asking them to change the direction of the one-way loop encompassing Petersen Way and Alaska Avenue…

Idleman: “Now this is the road that runs around the Russian Church and comes back out around the beach. And if it goes the other way you can see Redoubt, you can see the mountains, you can see the bluff in its fall colors with fireweed. As it is now you come around and all you do is look at the mouth of the river unless you stop and turn and look. And we felt that by going the other way you’d see the mountains and everything and go around and see Veronica’s and get a better view of the church.”

Kenai City Manager Rick Koch said he’s been working with the Kenai Police Department and Public Works Department and the change has been approved. There’s no definite date for the changeover; the Public Works Department first needs to find the appropriate signage to mark the new direction starting at the intersection of Mission and Overland Aves.
