Due to poor trail conditions on the final miles of the Southern route of the Iron Dog, a less than celebratory finish greeted the top finishers in the 2022 Iron dog as racers crossed the finish in Big Lake and were quickly loaded-up for Wasilla.
The team of Nick Olstead and Tyler Aklestad, Team #7, raced to the 2022 Iron Dog Snowmachine Race championship crossing the finish line at Big Lake at 11:21 a.m. and instantly loading their machines onto a trailer to be delivered to the Menard Arena in Wasilla for inspection and a ceremonial finish for the drivers. The official course time for Team #7 is 53 hours, 27 minutes and 21 seconds.
Team #34 Bradley Kishbaugh of Soldotna and Kelly Sommer of Nulato were sixth overall crossing the finish line in Big Lake at 15:53:35. Kishbaugh and Sommer posted a running time of 63 hours, 54 minutes and 34 seconds. Team #34 experienced mechanical issues on the final leg which caused the team to tow one of the machines to the finish; Team #34 finished just :32 seconds out of fifth place.
