A charging moose killed a man on Sunday near a residence in Homer.
According to the Alaska State Trooper dispatch, AST received a report that an adult male had been attacked by a cow moose in Homer shortly before noon on Sunday, May 19. The dispatch states that a cow moose charged two men, “kicking” one of them.
Medics arrived on the scene and declared the victim deceased.
Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Anchor Point responded to the scene.
The dispatch also adds that the cow moose left the area following the attack.
Alaska State Troopers confirmed to KTUU on Sunday night that the attack occurred near a residence in Homer and that the two men charged by the moose were not related.
With moose calving season in full swing, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game offers best practices when a person is around moose. “In late spring and summer, cow moose with young calves are very protective and will attack humans who come too close. If you see a calf on its own, be very careful because you may have walked between it and its mother — a very dangerous place to be.”
An investigation into the attack in Homer on Sunday is ongoing.
