One Week Remains Before Candidates Finalized in State Election Race

*This has been amended to show that John Cox of Anchor Point is running against incumbent Representative Paul Seaton for House District 31, as well as Homer Mayor Mary Wythe.*

The period to file as a candidate for a statewide or legislative office closes June 1 and Alaskans will get a final list of the August State Primary Election.

 

So far, nine candidates have filed for the three House of Representatives seats and one Senate seat up for election this fall.

 

On the House side, Speaker of the House Mike Chenault’s District 29 term ends this year. The incumbent has filed his letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission but APOC shows he’s not fully registered.

 

Representative Kurt Olson announced on April 1 that he would not run for re-election to his District 30 seat, but the race is heating up with four candidates who have filed their letters of intent.

 

For District 30, past K-Beach Assemblyman Kelly Wolf and Kenai City Manager Rick Koch have fully registered to be on the August ballot, while Soldotna City Councillor Keith Baxter and Democrat Shauna Thornton have filed their letters of intent.

 

And Homer’s District 31 incumbent Paul Seaton has registered in hopes of being elected to his House seat again. Challenging him for District 31 is Homer Mayor Mary Wythe, who is registered fully, and John Cox of Anchor Point who has registered with the Division of Elections but not filled out his APOC reports yet.

 

Oh the Senate side, District P Senator Gary Stevens of Kodiak has registered to be on the ballot for re-election. So far, no other candidates are opposing him.

 

The filing period for statewide and legislative candidacy ends June 1. July 17, 2016, is the deadline for Alaskans to register or update their registration in order to vote in the August 16 State Primary Election.
