Opposition Heard on Latest Version of Cannabis Bill

The latest version of a bill that would change criminal statutes relating to marijuana heard strong public opposition in the Senate today.

“It says, ‘one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, substances, of an aggregate weight of more than one ounce containing controlled substance,’ I think that when we’re limiting to one ounce of transportation we’re going to have problems with, you’re making a criminal offense out of someone who possesses the improper weight of marijuana.”

Along with that testimony, members of the public said that when they voted for legalization of recreational marijuana they expected it to no longer be on Alaska’s controlled substance list.

The bill was originally introduced as a line of defenses for anyone caught breaking the newly created marijuana laws and has since gone significant changes spurred by public opposition.

Another hearing on the bill is planned for Thursday, March 12 at 1:30 pm.
