Ostrander Wins Mountain West Championship & Named Athlete of the Year

RENO, Nev. — Allie Ostrander wrote another chapter in her storybook season on Friday by winning the Mountain West Championship at the Montreux Golf Club with a time of 21:49.97. With the victory she becomes just the second freshman in Mountain West history to win the individual title on the women’s side, joining BYU’s Kassi Andersen (2002).

The freshman completely swept the individual honors, winning Mountain West Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year and also earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors. She crossed the finish line 15 seconds clear of New Mexico’s Courtney Frerichs (22:05.19), giving the Kenai, Alaska native her third collegiate victory of the season.

Competing on a course that featured rolling hills, sharp turns and massive inclines, the No. 9 women’s team did all they could to keep up with No. 1 New Mexico. The Broncos ended up with 71 points to take second place while New Mexico ran away with the day after recording just 24.

As for streaks, it’s the third-straight year that a Bronco won the women’s individual title (Emma Bates — 2013, 2014), and the two freshman awards make it the second-straight year that Boise State swept the honor in both men’s and women’s competition (Emma Hyyppä and Andrew Rafla — 2014).

The Broncos will be back in action at the NCAA West Regional meet on Friday, Nov. 13 in Seattle.
