At a joint Kenai Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon, an overall update on the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District was given with a very positive annotation.

Interim Superintendent Sean Dusek touched on things like budget, student enrollment and performances.

He said before the 2010 fiscal year student enrollment was on a steady decline but enrollment increased with the 2014 fiscal year.

Dusek: “Yeah I’m extremely proud that we’re a leader within the state, there’s no doubt about that and my ultimate goal is to be a leader within the country, I think we’re poised to do that.”

He said one concern is the statewide budget but the district will continue to monitor that and hopefully some new district implementations will pay off.

Dusek also acknowledged that increasing student performances can be traced to outstanding teachers, using a recent teacher award as an example.

Dusek: “Well we’re really proud of what’s called the Hour of code program, Leigh Ray from Seward Elementary was able to put that program in place and able to qualify and win $10,000 in equipment to put more of that program in place which is basically software development and computer programming which is one of those skills which is going to be one of those high demand area in the future and a lot of colleges are recruiting kids to get into that.”
