Alaska State Troopers out of Soldotna conducted a traffic stop on a white 2020 Chevrolet Silverado U-Haul Truck for an equipment violation near Kenai Central High School on Wednesday morning, a little after midnight. The stop quickly turned into assault on an officer, ingesting controlled substances in order to hide them, and the use of a taser, according to the state’s online trooper dispatch.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ely Holmes, age 32, of Kenai. The passenger was Chase Cable, age 25, of Soldotna.
An Alaska Public Safety Information Network check revealed Holmes’ operator’s license was suspended September 29, 2018 through October 29, 2018 for a DMV points system violation. Holmes failed to take the proper steps in order to get his driver’s license reinstated.
During the traffic stop, Cable, the passenger, placed controlled substances in his mouth and ate them. Troopers attempted to place Cable into handcuffs and he attempted to escape the traffic stop in order to run. Cable kicked Troopers several times during the escape attempt. He then tried to push past Holmes and troopers during the arrest attempt.
Troopers subsequently used a taser and Cable was taken into custody without further incident.
The vehicle was impounded for investigative purposes. Holmes was arrested for Driving While License Suspended, Violating Conditions of Release, and Unlawful Possession of a trailer and four-wheeler that are believed to be stolen.
Cable was arrested for Tampering with Physical Evidence, Disorderly Conduct, as well as Fourth-Degree Assault on a Police Officer. Both Holmes and Cable were transported and remanded to Wildwood Pretrial where they were held without bail.
