A tax package that would increase taxes on the fishing and mining industries along with cigarettes, alcohol, motor fuel, widening the applications of marijuana taxes and implementing a personal state income tax has been described by Governor Bill Walker as a necessary measure to address the state’s fiscal situation.
However the response from some House lawmakers has been tepid.
Prior to the special session the various taxes were presented individually. Revenue Commissioner Randall Hoffbeck said the bills on their own did not gain enough support during the regular session but as a package, it’s easier to see all the pieces in one place.
At today’s hearing committee, Representative Les Gara said rolling them into one bill is almost like a recipe for failure since some will support one piece but not another.
Governor Walker described the move as necessary.
