A week after the Division I and Division II state track and field championships featured competition divided by school size, many of Alaska’s top track athletes gathered on Saturday at Homer High School to test themselves against themselves – no divisions – at the 2022 Brian Young Track Invitational.
Homer High School hosted the 2022 Brian Young Invitational with athletes from throughout Alaska competing on regional “club” teams and as individuals.
Peninsula and Kodiak athletes competed as the South Central All-Stars; Anchorage area athletes joined to form the Cook Inlet Conference, others (Fairbanks,& Southeast) competed as part of North/Southeast team.
Brian Young Invitational: Meet Highlights/ Top SoHi & KCHS Finishes
Dylan Dahlgren, graduate of Soldotna High School, was named Athlete of the Meet following his dominance in the throwing events. Dahlgren won the boys shot put with a new SoHi school record 56′ 3″ , the 5th farthest shot put in Alaska state history. Dylan also won the boys discus with a throw of 158′ 11″.
Top SoHi Performances
Jordan Strausbaugh posted a personal best 2:19.14 in the girls 800M run, good for 3rd place in a loaded field. Jordan also placed 7th in the 32ooM run and ran on the South Central All Stars 4X400M and 4X800M relays, winning the 4X800M relay.
Adara Hagelund placed 2nd in the high jump and the triple jump (33’8″ personal best) and placed 7th in the 100M hurdles.
Katelyn Morrison finished 4th in the high jump and 6th in the triple jump.
Jordan Ruffner placed 8th in the 32ooM run.
Kevin Steger finished 3rd n the shot put and 6th in the discus.
Leigh Tacey placed 6th in the 200M and 4th in the 400M and raced in the 4X100M and 4X400M relays.
Nathan Johnson finished 4th in the 800M and competed in the 4X200M relay and 4X400M relay.
Top KCHS Performances
Malena Grieme jumped a personal-best 14’6.5 ” for 5th place in the long jump. Malena also finished 7th in the 100M and competed in the 4X100M and 4X200M relays with South Central All Stars.
John Wright placed 4th in the boys discus.
Greg Fallon raced to a 3rd in the 800M and 8th in the 1600M and raced on the winning 4X800M relay.
Multiple Event Winners; Boys
Juneau’s James Connally raced to wins in the boys 100M and 200M.
Mark Sheppard, Eagle River, won both the 400M and 800M.
Dimond’s Jared Gardiner swept the 1600M and 3200M runs and finished third in the 800M.
Alan Szewczyk Jr., of Eagle River, outraced the field in the 110M hurdles and 300M hurdles.
Multiple Event Winners; Girls
Olyvia Mamae, from East, won the 100M, 200M and 100M hurdle races.
Palmer’s Katey Houser raced to victories in the 400M and 800M.

The Brian Young Invitational was established in 2013 to honor Brian Young, a prominent Kodiak fisherman and advocate for youth sports who died in 2011 while summitting Denali, and has been contested at multiple schools since organized by Kodiak track coach Marcus Dunbar and opening at Kodiak High School.
