The Soldotna Stars recorded their first victory and the Chugiak Mustangs took home the tournament trophy as the 2018 Peninsula Ice Challenge closed-out on Saturday at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
The Chugiak Mustangs defeated the North Pole Patriots 9-0 to earn Chugiak a 3-0 tournament record and the Peninsula Ice Challenge title. North Pole finished tournament play at 1-1-1.
The Soldotna Stars down Kenai 6-1 for second place finishing at 1-1-1 for the tournament. Kenai ended tournament play with an 0-3 record.
SoHi 6 – Kenai 1
The Stars out shot Kenai 33-14 in Saturday’s pairing; SoHi downing Kenai 6-1. The Stars score a lone, power play goal in the first period off the stick of Galen Brantley III for a 1-0 lead. The Stars added three, unanswered goals in the second period with goals from Ethan Yeager, Dylan Walton and Wyatt Medcoff. The Stars added a short-handed goal by Journey Miller and a power play goal by Trent Powell to built a 6-0 lead in the third period. Kenai scored its only goal on a power play with :15 seconds remaining off the stick of Miles Marsten. SoHi goalie Corbin Wirz recorded 13 saves on 14 shots: Kenai’s Jackson Cross saved 27 of 33 shots.
