Peninsula Ice Challenge Opens Hockey Season

The 2022 Peninsula Ice Challenge Hockey Tournament opened the high school hockey season for the Soldotna Stars and Kenai Kardinals with games at the Soldotna Regional Sports Center and the Kenai Ice facility.

 

Houston 5 – SoHi 4

The Soldotna Stars battled the reigning Division II state hockey champion Houston Hawks into an overtime 5-4 opening game at the Peninsula Ice Challenge at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.

 

The Stars opened the scoring on a Gehret Medcoff goal at 10:01 for a 1-0 SoHi lead.  Houston answered with a Domnin Efimov goal at 13:13 to tie the game at 1-1.  SoHi regained the lead just twelve seconds later with an Aiden Stinnett goal with assists from Silas Larsen and Boone Theiler to stake the Stars to a 2-1, first period advantage.

In the second period, Houston scored a pair of goals by Daniel Matveev for a 3-2 Hawks lead.  SoHi’s Silas Larsen evened the game at 3-3 with assists by Boone Theiler and Jace Appelhans.  SoHi was unable to score on a 5 on 3 power play (for more than 1:30) and surrender a goal to Houston’s Trenton Huber, coming out of the box, with :20 seconds remaining in the second period. Houston 4 – SoHi 3

SoHi scored the only goal of the third period with Jace Appelhanz lighting the lamp at 8:54 of the third for a 4-4 tie.

In overtime, Houston’s Huber scores the game-winner at 5;03 and the Hawks down SoHi 5-4.

 

Kenai 5- Tri Valley 2

Kenai’s Logan Mese capped the scoring for Kenai with a short-handed goal in the final minute pushing Kenai to a 5-2 victory over the Tri-Valley Warriors on Thursday at the Kenai Ice facility.

 

Tri-Valley scored the first goal and owned a 1-0 lead in the first period.  In the second period ,Kenai scored on a power-play by Avery Martin and a goal by Jaden Garner for a 2-1 Kardinal advantage.  Kenai took a 3-1 lead with a Logan Mese goal.  Tri-Valley closed the gap to 3-2 before Kenai added a short-handed goal by Avery Martin and the final goal by Mese.  Final Score: Kenai 5 – Tri-Valley 2
