Peninsula Oilers Drop Slugfest Against Mat-Su Miners 17-1

The Peninsula Oilers drop their fourth consecutive game of the Alaska Baseball League season, falling to the Mat-Su Miners 17-1 at Hermon Brothers Field on Tuesday. The 16-run loss is the largest across the entire ABL through the first month of ABL play.

The loss for the Oilers drops their record to 11-8, the Miners leap-frog the Oilers for the top spot in the ABL at 11-7.

The Oilers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on an Evan Berkey RBI hit-by-pitch, which scored Ryan Novis, who reached on a single, giving the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the Miners unloaded on Oilers pitching, striking for an ABL season-high 12 runs in a single inning, including three home runs,; the first a grand slam by Miners left fielder Kona Quiggle.

Oilers starter Bryan Woo was pulled after recording only one out in the inning. Oilers reliever Justin Jaime’s night consisted of recording the last two outs in the inning.

The Miners added three more runs in the second inning, and two in the third, stretching their lead to 17-1.

The highlight of the game for the Oilers, was position players shining on the mound.  Grand Wood, Paul Kunst and Tyler Duke (position players who started in the field) tossed three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one.

 

Oilers Continue Road-Trip Throughout Week

The Oilers continue their seven-game road trip against the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks Wednesday at Lee Jordan Field scheduled for 7 p.m. The Oilers face the Chinooks again Friday at 7 p.m..

The Oilers return to Hermon Brothers Field to take on the Miners Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Oilers conclude the road trip with a three-game series against the Anchorage Bucs at Mulcahy Stadium beginning with game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at 5 p.m., followed by a Sunday matinee beginning at 2 p.m.

The Oilers return to Coral Seymour Memorial Park on July 4th against the Miners in the first of a five-game series.
