Peninsula Oilers One-Hitter Not Enough Against Anchorage Glacier Pilots

The Peninsula Oilers gave a free pass to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots… literally and metaphorically. One hit allowed by Oilers pitching was not enough to overcome nine walked Pilots batters that fueled Anchorage to a 4-2 win on Sunday at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Oilers bats scraped together the first pair of runs of the game in the second against Pilots starter Michael Cherwenka. Two-out RBI singles from Victor Carlino and Drew Thorpe gave the Oilers a quick 2-0 lead.

Then, the Pilots walked their way to their third win of the season.

In the fourth, Anchorage tied the game on a pair of RBI base on balls. One against Oilers starter Brian Merken, and the second against reliever Giancarlo Servin, knotted the game 2-2.

The Pilots lead-off man reached base twice on Sunday, both times, Anchorage scored runs.

In the sixth, the Pilots tacked on another pair of runs on walks and fielding errors. The go-ahead run scored on a balk with Servin allowed a lead-off walk.  An unearned run on a fielding error on Oilers shortstop Skyler Messinger with Oilers Assistant Coach Ryan Doran on the mound to put Anchorage up 4-2.

The Oilers ended the game with a pair of  two-out hits and a walk to load the bases before Damon Keith grounded out to third to end the game.

 

Oilers vs Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks   Monday    7 p.m.

The Oilers (1-3) take on the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks on Monday to end their five-game road trip to open the season while the Pilots (3-1) moved within one game of the Anchorage Bucs for the best record in the Alaska Baseball League with the win.

 

Home Opener Set For June 12th

The first home stand of the season for the Peninsula Oilers, a six-game series against the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, is scheduled to open Wednesday, June 12th at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.  Game time set for 7 p.m.

Wednesday is KSRM/ESPN Night at the Ballpark with free admission to the ball park.
