Peninsula Oilers Pound Out Nine Runs In Win Against Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks

Fueled by a six-run bottom of the fourth inning, the Peninsula Oilers racked-up their tenth win of the 2018 Alaska Baseball League season, defeating the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks 9-1 Thursday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

With the win the Oilers extended their ABL leading record to 10-4, the Chinooks fell to 5-8, last in the league standings.

After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Oilers jumped on Chinooks starter Michael Barker for two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Evan Berkey led off the bottom of the first with a walk and was driven in by Ryan Koch on an RBI double, his 12th run-driven-in on the season.  The Oilers struck for their second run of the inning on an RBI double by Brian Leonhardt, which drove in Koch.

 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Oilers exploded for a season-high, six-run inning.  Runs scored by John Mackay, Paul Kunst, Michael Yourg, Matthew Kirk, Berkey and Ryan Novis powered the Oilers to an 8-0 lead after four innings.

 

In the bottom of the fifth inning Yourg reached on a one-out single, the Oilers scored on an RBI single by Berkey pushing the lead to 9-1    The Chinooks added one run earlier, in the top of the frame.

 

Oilers starter Bryan Woo earned his first win of the ABL season after a five inning start, allowing only one run on three hits, while striking out three.  Oilers relievers Calvin Farris and Andrew Lopez combined to throw three scoreless innings in relief of Woo.

 

Over the last two games, the Oilers have outscored opponents 19-7.

 

Oilers Continue Homestand Against Chinooks Through Weekend

The Oilers and Chinooks continue their five-game series Thursday with game two scheduled for 7 p.m.

Friday, AK USA Federal Credit Union is sponsoring Oilers baseball with free admission.

Saturday is Elks Flag Day at Oilers Park with the formal Elks Flag Ceremony planned for 6:30 p.m.  Admission is free for the OIlers vs Chinook game.  The day begins with the 2nd Annual Emergency Responders Softball Game scheduled for 2 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.  Both games will be broadcast on ESPN 1140AM andd www.radiokenai.com.

Sunday, Birch Ridge Community Church sponsors the final game of the five-game series on with a 2 p.m game time.  Free admission to the ballpark.
