The Peninsula Oilers end a losing streak and begin their first win streak of the 2019 Alaska Baseball League season with a doubleheader sweep of the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks on Saturday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. A 12-7 win in game one along with an 8-6 win in game two propels the Oilers (4-6) into a tie with the Chinooks for fourth place in the ABL standings.
Game One: Oilers 12- Chinooks 7
In danger of dropping their fourth consecutive game, the Oilers came to life in the fifth inning. Trailing 5-2 entering the inning, the Oilers scored five runs on five hits including an Ethan Patrick two-run double, which put the Oilers up 7-5 at the end of the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Oilers shut the door with a Calvin Farris grand slam, his first homer of the season that put the Oilers up 11-5. The Oilers added another run on a Bobby Goodloe RBI base on balls, putting them up 12-5.
The Oilers held the score with Farris on the mound, retiring the Chinooks in order in the top of the seventh.
Game Two: Oilers 8- Chinooks 6
The Chinooks jumped out to an early 4-1 lead through two innings against Oilers starter Eric Reardon; Oilers to jump to life in the third.
A six-run frame included a two-run, base hit from both Bobby Goodloe and Skyler Messinger highlighting the inning, putting the Oilers up 7-4.
The Oilers added a run in the fourth to go up 8-4.
Following a two-run Chinooks fifth, the Oilers turned to Connor McCord, who started the game at first base, to record a five-out save in his first outing on the mound this season.
McCord also went 2-3 in game two at the plate.
Final game in homestand on Sunday
The Oilers close out their six-game homestand against the Chinooks on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Little League Day, a special Father’s Day game with free admission at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.
