The Kenai Peninsula’s high school girls will combine to compete at the 2023 Alaska High School Girls Invitational State Hockey Tournament; breaking-up the traditional Anchorage-only tournament along with teams from the Valley and Fairbanks.

 

The Girls Invitational State Hockey Tournament opens play on Thursday, February 9th and running through Saturday, February 11th at the Ben Boeke Arena in Anchorage.

 

The Kenai Peninsula Team (KCHS/SoHi) will open play against South/Bartlett in the tournament’s first game scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Thursday, February 9th.

 

Eric Fabian, assistant coach for the SoHi hockey program and KCHS coach Steve Hallam will coach the KCHS/SoHi girls team.

According to Coach Eric Fabian, while the Anchorage School District (ASD) teams play a regular season, the non-ASD schools (Kenai Peninsula, Valley and Fairbanks) did not. The non-ASD teams are comprised of girls who played the regular season with the traditional coed high school JV/Varsity teams.  The hope is this will help to grow the game, potentially lead to having teams join in a conference with teams from Anchorage for a regular season of girls’ high school hockey.

 

The Anchorage Hockey Association runs the girls hockey regular season in Anchorage and hosts the culminating girls tournament, with the support and sanction of the Anchorage School District.

 

The eight-team bracket is seeded based on the Cook Inlet Conference regular season standings and placement of the “invited ” teams.  Anchorage teams are combined programs with the Dimond/West girls team posting a perfect 8-0 record and earning the #1 seed. (see attached bracket)

2022 Girls Hockey State

The 2022 Alaska High School Girls State Hockey Tournament, the season-ending tournament for Cook Inlet Conference girls hockey teams, crowned the Dimond/West hockey team champions with a 2-0 victory over the South/Bartlett team.
