Peninsula Volleyball Tournament Developed For High School Teams To Close Season

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

A collaborative effort between Kenai Peninsula high school volleyball teams and coaches, school athletic directors and school district personnel will provide a season-culminating volleyball tournament for Kenai Central, Nikiski, Homer, Seward and Soldotna High School.

The tournament will consist of two days of competition split between Kenai Central High School and Soldotna High School, with games scheduled for Thursday, November 5th and Saturday, November 7th.

Peninsula volleyball teams suspended competition in early and mid-October when COVID-19 levels on the Peninsula rose into the High “Red” Risk Level throughout the peninsula.  ASAA (Alaska Schools Activities Association), on October 13th cancelled all state level competition for in-season, fall sports (volleyball and swimming on the Kenai).  ASAA did provide for regional tournaments (or peninsula tournaments for the Kenai Peninsula) to be completed by November 21, 2020.

According to a release from SoHi Athletic Director Kyle McFall, the approved KPBSD Mitigation Plan includes: ” a strict mitigation plan that we (schools) must adhere to. Masks are required at all times – even for participating athletes.  Spectators must be on the approved guest list to gain entry to the school. “

The tournament is not open to the public in general, instead each athlete is permitted two guests to be in attendance at games in which the athlete is participating. Guests are not permitted to be in attendance for games that their athlete is not participating in.  Part of the Mitigation Plan also includes no shared locker-rooms and custodial staffs will be cleaning the rooms according to CDC protocols before and after usage.

Tournament Seeding
