Peninsula Winter Games a Hit Despite Spring Temps

This weekend marked the 38th Annual Peninsula Winter Games, put on by the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce.

The Kids Carnival was held at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex on Saturday. With the sun shining and temps in the 40s, it looked drastically different than last year’s sub zero temps.

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce also offered free lunch and dinner to people who came out and January Yeager told us it was a great turnout.

“The weather’s been a little warm so that did put a kink in some of our activities but kids are still coming out. We gave away over 800 game bags and over 850 corndogs were served at lunch so it’s been great. We’ve got a lot of different activities going on and the kids have had fun icing cookies and doing the kids crafts and ice bowling and all of that good stuff.”

Johna Beech from the Kenai Chamber of Commerce was there to help with the ice bowling.

“The one thing about Alaskans is they’re die hards, so whether its forty degrees or negative fifteen they are going to come out for a community event such as this.”

9-year-old Isabella Rodriguez said she and her family had fun with all the activities but icing cookies was her favorite.

“We made cookies, we built stuff, um, we had hot cocoa, and we were going to jump on the bounce house but we didn’t.”
