The Division II powerhouse Soldotna Stars overpowered the Division III Homer Mariners in Homer on Saturday; SoHi again lead by its defense which generated two Mariner fumbles and three Mariner interceptions, en route to a 61-14 SoHi victory.
The Soldotna Stars will close-out the regular season with a traditional, season-ending game against the Kenai Kardinals on Friday, October 9th at Soldotna High School.
The Mariners, the #1 seed from the Kenai Peninsula for the upcoming Division III football playoffs, will be off next week and return to host a semi-final DIII playoff game on October 17th in Homer.
SoHi 61 – Homer 14
The Soldotna Stars ran five plays from scrimmage in the first quarter of Saturday’s contest against Homer and SoHi lead 21-6 after one quarter. On the Stars first drive, Josh Heiber scored on a 10-yard run on the second play from scrimmage. Following a 40-yard touchdown run by Homer quarterback Carter Tennison, midway through the first quarter; SoHi’s Heiber ran the kick-off back 83 yards for the Stars second score. After holding Homer on downs, SoHi quarterback Brock Wilson connected with tight end Josh Pieh on a 47-yard touchdown pass. First Quarter Score: SoHi 21, Homer 6.
The second quarter was controlled by the Stars defense and punishing ground game. The Stars scored just 1:39 into the second quarter on a 50-yard run by Heiber. SoHi forced a Mariner fumble on the ensuing kick-off and scored on a 6-yard run by Wilson. The Stars defense produced two interceptions on the Mariners next two possessions; one for Cage Poe and one for Dennis Taylor. Halftime Score: SoHi 34, Homer 6
A pair of rushing touchdowns for SoHi in the third extended the Stars lead to 48-6, with Austin Escott scoring from the one-yard line and Dennis Taylor running in a touchdown from 30-yards out.
The fourth quarter was played with a running clock and Homer scored its final touchdown on an 8-yard Tennison run. Hunter Richardson ran in a SoHi touchdown from 18 yards and the Stars closed-out the scoring with an interception returned for a touchdown by Brayden Taylor. Final Score: SoHi 61, Homer 14.
