Next up the Best of the West!
The 2015 Pop Warner Junior Midget team, comprised of players from the central Kenai Peninsula, advances to the Best of the West Pop Warner Football Tournament following a victory over the Spokane North Falcons 49-13 on Saturday in the Division III Northern Region Championships at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas, Washington.
The Saints will play a single game at the Best of the West competition on Dec. 5 in Murrieta, California.
Highlights of the Saints 49-13 victory over the North Falcons…
The Saints defense stopped the Falcon’s on their first drive forcing a punt which gave the Saints great field position. After a few plays the quarterback for the Saints Jersey Truesdell found his way into the end zone on a quarterback sneak. On the following kickoff, the Saints recovered the ball on the Falcons’ 40 setting up a rushing touchdown by Josh Heiber. With the defense back on the field, Levi Rosin picked off the Falcon’s quarterback, setting up another quick score, this time with a pass play to Mekhai Rich from Jersey Truesdell. The Falcon’s were unable to run against the Saints defense and went to the air, only to be picked-off in the end zone by safety Mekhai Rich. Half time score 28-0 in favor of the Saints. On the opening drive of the second half, Zach Burnett found the end zone on a 63-yard run up the middle. The Saints added a Brayden VanMeter rushing touchdown. After a short defensive stand, the Saints where once again scoring this time on a 2-yard run by Zach Hanson. Final score Kenai Peninsula Saints 49 – Falcons 13.
The Saints team is comprised of 22 players that made the trip; 14 from Skyview Middle School, five from Kenai Middle School, two from Nikiski Middle/Senior High School, one from K-Beach Elementary and one from Cook Inlet Academy. Most of the players are eighth-graders and the team competes in the 95 to 155 pounds weight category.
