Collision with Nearby Wire Caused Soldotna Schools Outage

Repairs were made to the power system of Soldotna Elementary and Soldotna Montessori after a vehicle collision with a nearby power pole support wire caused an early morning outage Monday. Those schools will open on a normal schedule on Tuesday, November 10.

Erkeneff: “We had an issue with the power feed coming into the building and then some issues in the building and so we worked together with HEA and the borough to make sure the building is safe for students for school tomorrow, so yes, there’s school tomorrow. And they had to go through several different tests to make sure everything was clear and working great through our power system.”

According to Homer Electric Association’s Joe Gallagher, the outage was caused around 6:15 am Monday when an unknown vehicle struck a nearby guy wire, the cables that support power poles.

Gallagher: “There was a report of a vehicle hitting a guy wire that supports the power pole right on the corner of Park Ave. and the Spur Highway. The impact with the guy wire did damage the transformer, it blew a fuse, and we lost power to about 11 meter locations in that area, including Soldotna Elementary.”

Gallagher says the vehicle was gone when crews arrived.

Although power was restored to the school and surrounding meters by around 8:30 am, Erkeneff says the district decided to cancel school before students showed up.

Erkeneff: “We didn’t feel like our generator and everything was working and batteries had gone out in some of our extra lighting that we have so we made a judgement call to continue assessing the building and make sure it was going to be safe for students and make the repairs today.”
